PAST & PRESENT

The Swan Inn c1955

PAST

The Swan is a fifteenth century Coaching Inn located in the heart of an historic village. Our front aspect overlooks the pump garden which accomodates the Well of Remembrance to Queen Victoria and is somewhat dwarfed by the magnificent spire of St Mary's Church, illuminated at night and used as a beacon by regular visitors to the village. The oldest part of The Swan dates back to the 14th century when it was thought to have been an alehouse. It was not until extensive building work took place in 1759 that the inn started taking in overnight guests. During the French wars of the nineteenth century, it was used to billet soldiers and their horses. Further extensions and renovation took place in 1826 when the present brick front was added. The bricks were made by the Woolpit Brick Company. The Brickworks closed after the 1939-45 war, mainly because of a shortage of the special brick earth.

PRESENT

We have recently carried out a refurbishment at The Swan which has included a complete repaint of the bar and food areas as well as a brand new slate bar complete with new pumps dispensing both quality continental lagers and traditional local beers. We are currently working hard to maintain and improve our garden and a complete refurbishment of our kitchen and food preparation areas will be commencing shortly.
